Length × width of each surface, added up: a driveway, a walkway and a patio, for example.

How long 100 sq ft of this surface takes you, pre-treat and rinse included. Time one section on your next job.

Driving there, unloading, setting up, packing up and leaving.

The rate you charge per hour, which already covers your pay, overhead and profit. Not sure? Work it out with the labor rate calculator.

Surfactant, sodium hypochlorite, fuel for the machine: anything used up on this job, at your cost.

Added on chemicals and supplies only. Use 0 to pass them through at cost.

This is a starting point, not a quote.

You just priced a wash from the square footage. Save that price per square foot as a service in Handro's pricebook, measure the next driveway on a satellite map right from the estimate line, and send it. The customer approves and signs on their phone, and the approved estimate becomes a job ready to schedule. Team is US$49 a month flat for up to 10 people, Solo is US$14.99 a month for one person, and Starter is free for one person and 10 jobs a month.

How to use it

  1. Measure each surface and add up the square feet.
  2. Put in your pace, your setup time and the hourly rate you charge.
  3. Add chemicals and any markup, then read the job price and your price per square foot.

How this is worked out

Time on the job is the square feet ÷ 100 × your minutes per 100 sq ft, plus setup, travel and cleanup. The price is that time × your hourly rate, plus chemicals and their markup.

With the example numbers: 1,500 sq ft at 5 minutes per 100 is 75 minutes, plus 30 is 105 minutes, or 1.75 hours. At $80 an hour that's $140. Add $25 of chemicals with a 20% markup, $30, and the price is $170. Divided by 1,500 sq ft, that's about $0.11 a square foot.

Your price per square foot comes from your pace

Two crews quoting the same driveway can both be right at different prices, because one cleans 100 sq ft in 4 minutes and the other in 8. Time a few sections on real jobs and keep a pace for each surface: flat concrete, pavers, a wood deck, siding.

A deck or a heavily stained driveway takes longer per foot than clean concrete. Run it again with that surface's pace and add the results, instead of stretching one rate over everything.

Set a minimum charge

Setup and travel cost the same on a 200 sq ft patio as on a 2,000 sq ft driveway, so a small job priced only by the foot pays for the drive and little else. Decide the least you'll take a job for, and quote that whenever the calculator comes in lower.
